Preparing to speak with a works council

How to organise a concise conversation with a Betriebsrat about a fixed-term contract.

Workplace representatives meeting around a table

A works council (Betriebsrat) can be a valuable workplace contact, but the first conversation is easier when the request is concrete.

Bring a short chronology

List the original start date, every agreed end date, extension signature dates and the current role. Add when you learned that renewal was uncertain. Keep the chronology to one page and bring the underlying documents separately.

Ask what the council can actually do

Ask whether the council knows of permanent vacancies, has information about staffing plans, or can explain internal procedures. Clarify confidentiality and whether the council can accompany you in a meeting.

A works council conversation does not necessarily pause a statutory deadline or replace advice from a lawyer. If the contract is about to end—or has ended—ask qualified counsel about timing in parallel.

End the meeting by confirming who will follow up, on which question, and by what date. A modest, documented next step is more useful than an open-ended promise.
